Termites are something else to contend with. These critters are drawn toward exposed wood. If your house has paint that is peeling or chipping, it’s time to do something about it. Once the paint begins to separate from the lumber, it becomes a snowball effect. It’s time to replace the entire board when:

• Moisture will penetrate behind the existing paint while expanding and contracting the wood fibers, which causes additional paint to chip off.
• The sun will also bake the finish on the wood, eventually exposing the wood directly to the elements.
• Fungi will begin to grow in dark and damp corners. It manifests in white chalky flakes.

Springtime is the best time to take a look at the eaves around the house.

• Poke at them with a broom handle or ski pole.
• Look for soft spots.

If you locate a damaged area call a professional to remove it ASAP so that the dry rot does not spread. If it goes unchecked, dry rot and termite damage will end up causing a tremendously expensive amount of damage to your home.
